Yökuvausta

Nyt kun elämme vielä toistaiseksi pimeää vuodenaikaa, voi sen vuoksi laittaa muutamia yökuvia tämän vuoden puolelta. Näitähän on oikeasti kertynyt paljon paljon enemmänkin kuin mitä tässä nähdään, joten tulen todennäköisesti laittamaan lisää yökuvia vielä lähitulevaisuudessa.

Yökuvaus on mielenkiintoista, mutta hieman epävarmaa puuhaa etenkin kun on filmikameran kanssa liikenteessä. Valotan kuvaa yleensä oman tuntuman mukaan, mutta usein valaistusta tulee mietittyä ja ehkä ylianalysoituakin. Miten vaikuttaa yläpuolella oleva valotolppa? Entä taustalla hehkuvat sataman valot? Entäs valkoinen lumihanki? Mitä jos kohde on tumma? Kameran valotusmittariin ei kannata luottaa sillä se näkee kaiken keskiharmaana, jolloin saattaa tapahtua ylivalotusta ja huippuvalojen puhkipalamista. Ylivalotus on tietysti pienempi paha kuin totaalinen alivalotus, mutta yötunnelma siinä samalla myös menee.

Takataskussani ei valitettavasti ole mitään taattua reseptiä kunnon yökuviin, vaikka sellainen kannattaisi ehkä olla. Nimittäin joka kerta valotusta tulee mietittyä vähän liiaksikin. Kaikesta harhailusta huolimatta yleensä kuitenkin saan ihan kelvollisia yökuvia. Jalustaa voin ainakin suositella.

Night photography

As we are living dark season at the moment it's good to put out some night photographs from this year. Actually I have quite many night photographs already in my reserve so probably I am going to upload some other ones in the near future.

Night photography is interesting field, but to be honest usually I am not so comfortable about the results during the photo shoot. This happens when I use my film camera and cannot take any test shots. Often I just tend to expose film based on the feeling and estimation of the illumination of the scene. Many times I just use too much time thinking what exposure I should use or analyze other aspects of the scene. How does that streetlight above affect on illumination? What about the harbour lights? How about snow? What if the subject is dark? You cannot trust the camera's light meter as it sees everything in medium gray and would probably overexpose the scene and blow out highlights. Generally it's maybe better to overexpose than underexpose, but then you will end up with a ruined atmosphere.

Unfortunately I don't have any special tricks when it comes to night photography, even when I should have. Every time I pay a lot of effort for thinking the correct exposure and other things. But after all the hassle I manage to get pretty good night shots. At least I can recommend a sturdy tripod.
