Valoa kaamoksen keskellä - The Cure Helsingin areenalla

Kävin lokakuun alussa katsomassa The Curen keikan Helsingin Hartwall Arenalla. Olinkin jo monta vuotta odottanut tilaisuutta nähdä Cure livenä ja se olikin ilouutinen kun noin vuosi sitten kuulin yhtyeen vihdoin saapuvan Suomeen. Viime visiitistä olikin kulunut jo 20 vuotta, joten bändi ei ole mikään jokapäiväinen ilmestys näillä kulmilla.

Illasta ei ollut mitään sen suurempia ennakko-odotuksia, joten eipä ollut myöskään sijaa pettymyksille. Eikä tarvinnutkaan, sillä konsertti oli oikein mainio. En ole viime aikoina hirveästi käynyt missään keikoilla, mutta kaikesta huolimatta tämä oli silti parasta livemusiikkia pitkään aikaan.

Settilista oli painottunut Disintegration-albumin ympärille, eikä varmasti suotta, sillä se kuuluu yhtyeen tärkeimpiin teoksiin. Keikka kesti encoreineen päivineen kolme tuntia, mutta aika ei missään tapauksessa käynyt pitkäksi. Yhtyeellä kuitenkin riittää hittejä enemmän kuin yhdeltä istumalta osaisi luetella, eikä konsertin jälkeen jäänyt sellaista oloa, että jotain oleellista olisi puuttunut settilistalta. En ajatellut, että yhtyeen hieman synkempää puolta edustavaa One Hundred Yearsia olisi kuultu, mutta se esitettiin kuitenkin ja yhdessä Disintegrationin kanssa se oli ehkä konsertin mieleenpainuvimpia hetkiä.

Olin lukevinani netistä pari hieman nihkeää arviota konsertista, mutta en voi niihin juuri yhtyä. Kiertuepaidat eivät ehkä olleet kovin hienoja ja melko kalliitakin, mutta konsertti itsessään oli erinomainen ja Robert Smithin ääni oli samanlaisessa kunnossa kuin olisin voinut kuvitella sen olevan 30 vuotta sitten.

Positiivista on tietysti myös se, että olen varsin tyytyväinen konsertista ottamiini kuviin. Koko konsertin ajan samoilla jalansijoilla seisominen ei anna mahdollisuutta kovin monipuolisiin ja vaihteleviin kuviin, eikä koko bändi myöskään mahtunut kertaakaan samaan ruutuun. Tällä kertaa käytin hieman erilaista tekniikkaa kuvien valottamisessa ja täytyykin ehkä ottaa tämä oikein tavaksi. Yhdistelmä f8 ja 1/250 s ISO 400:n filmillä tuottaa melko stabiilia ja toimivaa jälkeä tällaisessa areenakonsertissa, tietysti valaistuksesta riippuen.

Light in the darkness - The Cure in Helsinki

Last October I was in the concert of The Cure in Helsinki. I had been waiting for this opportunity to see the band many years and about a year ago I was very happy when I heard about this upcoming event. Last time when The Cure had a show in Finland was 20 years ago, so they are not the visitors you could see too often here.

Somehow I didn't have huge expectations before the concert, so there wasn't a chance for disappointment. And it was completely unneccessary as the concert was great. I haven't been in concerts so much recently and so this was the best live music experience for a long time. 

There were lots of songs from the album Disintegration in their setlist. And it's no wonder as it's a crucial album in their discography. The concert took 3 hours including all the encores and it definitely wasn't too long concert at all. Actually there are more hits by The Cure than you could probably count just like that, and after the concert there wasn't any songs I thought were missing from the setlist. I didn't think that they would have played the song One Hundred Years, which is on the gloomier side of their discography, but they played it anyway and with the song Disintegration it was maybe the most memorable moment of the concert.

I read couple of not so praising reviews of the concert and really can't agree with them. The tour shirts were maybe not so great looking and were pretty expensive too, but the concert was great and Robert Smith's vocals were as good as they probably were 30 years ago. There was of course good reviews too.

By the way I'm very happy with the photos I took. You don't get much variation to the photographs if you stand on the same place during the whole concert like I did. For example I couldn't fit the whole band in any frame. This time I used a different exposure technique than usually and should really continue on this road. The combination of f8, 1/250 sec and ISO 400 film really works on these arena concerts, depending on the lighting of course.

So, if you can catch The Cure on this tour, I really recommend it!

Kierros hautausmaalla

Tein syyskuun puolella kierroksen Turun hautausmaalla. Erityisesti hautausmaan vanha puoli on täynnä historiaa ja on muutenkin varsin mielenkiintoinen ja kaunis paikka. Vanhalla puolella taitaa olla ikää jo lähemmäs 200 vuotta ja jotkin hautakivet ovatkin aikamoisia monumentteja. Oletettavasti monet niistä kuuluvat varakkaammille suvuille ja korkeassa asemassa olleille henkilöille. Tai uskoisin ainakin niin.

Mitä hautausmaan koristeluun tulee, kaikenlaiset punaiset kukat ja verenpisarat näyttivät tuolloin olevan suosiossa vaikkei niitä juuri näissä kuvissa kovin runsain mitoin näykään. Hautausmaata pidetään myös hyvässä kunnossa ja kauniina paikkana se onkin oiva kohde syksyiselle kävelylenkille. Suosittelen siis käyntiä valoisaan aikaan.

A tour at the cemetery

In September I made a stroll in Turku cemetery. Especially the old part of the cemetery is full of history and it's a very interesting and beautiful place. It's more than 200 years old and some tombstones are quite monumental. I think those are the graves for rich families and those who have belonged to a higher social class.

Cemeteries are good places for walking and I recommend to visit this place in daytime.
