Kevään valoa ja pitkiä varjoja

Kun vielä muutaman päivän ajan eletään virallista kevätkuukautta voi ihan hyvällä omatunnolla palata kuukausi-pari taaksepäin.

Maalis-huhtikuussa on jotain samaa kuin loka-marraskuussa. Ilmassa on koleutta, aurinko paistaa matalalta ja puut ovat lehdettömiä. Alkukevät ja loppusyksy on hyvää aikaa löytää valaistuksen luomaa yllättävää dramatiikkaa aivan lähiympäristöstä. Kirkkaana ja matalalta paistava ilta-aurinko luo syviä varjoja ja jyrkkiä kontrasteja. Tavallisina pitämämme jokapäiväiset maisemat saattavat muuttua mielenkiintoisiksi näkymiksi. Mutta usein ne myös katoavat yhtä nopeasti kuin ilmestyivätkin.

Kuvasin keväällä hieman vaihtelevaan tahtiin ja tässä muutama poiminta kahdelta eri filmiltä. Yleensä kiinnitän paljon huomiota varjoihin. Mielestäni ne ovat lähes yhtä tärkeä osa kuvaa kuin varsinainen kohde. Varjot voivat myös osoittaa katsojalle jotain sellaista, joka on kuvan ulkopuolella, mutta muuten olennainen osa ympäristöä. Se voi olla joko hetkellistä tai pysyvää, mutta kuvanottohetkellä kuitenkin todellisuutta.

The highlights and long shadows of spring

As there are only few days left this spring season, it's a good excuse to take a look at March and April. 

There is something similar with early spring and late autumn. Air is chilly, sun is shining at a low angle and there are no leaves in trees. This is a good time to find some dramatic scenes from your everyday surroundings. Bright low-angle sunlight creates deep shadows and high contrast scenes. The everyday surroundings can become interesting and somehow different. But these scenes tend to disappear as quickly as they were appeared.

I didn't photograph so actively during this spring and this is my selection from two different film rolls. I pay much attention to shadows when I am photographing. I think shadows can be almost as important part of a photograph as the subject. They can show something that is out of the photographs range, but crucial part of the environment. It can be momentary or permanent, but at the same moment when camera's shutter is released it's reality.

Tangentially Parenthetical – katukuvia maailmalta

Kaupunginkirjastosta tarttui taas hiljattain mukaani valokuvakirjallisuutta. Tällä kertaa yhdysvaltalaisen Ed Templetonin tuorein kirja Tangentially Parenthetical. Viime vuoden puolella ilmestynyt teos tarjoaa mukavan kattauksen Templetonin kameran eteen sattuneita ihmisiä ja tilanteita viimeisen 20 vuoden ajalta.

Tutustuin Templetonin kuviin ja tuotantoon pari vuotta sitten Wayward Cognitions -nimisen kirjan kautta. Suorat ja oivaltavat katukuvat tekivätkin heti vaikutuksen ja Tangentially Parenthetical on selvää jatkoa tälle. Templeton on jo pitkään häärinyt skeittikulttuurin ja valokuvauksen parissa ja hänen ilmeisen ehtymättömistä arkistoista löytyy materiaalia varmasti vielä monen kirjan edestä.

Tangentially Parenthetical sisältää noin 150 valokuvaa ja ne on otettu pitkin Pohjois-Amerikkaa, Eurooppaa ja Japania. Kuvaavaa Templetonin tyylissä ja lähestymistavassa on se, että useiden kuvien kohdalla tulin nauraneeksi ääneen. Huumori ja ihmiset ovat keskeisessä osassa Templetonin kuvissa. Moniin kuviin on tallentunut se ohikiitävä hämmennyksen hetki kun ihminen tajuaa tuntemattoman ohikulkijan juuri napanneen kuvan hänestä. Kaikissa kuvissa tarkennus ei ole osunut aivan kohdilleen ja monissa kuvissa löytyy myös pientä liike-epäterävyyttä. Se kertonee siitä, että kuvat on otettu nopeasti lonkalta. Joidenkin mielestä tällaiset tekniset seikat saattavat olla häiritseviä, mutta ilman nopeaa reagointia hetki olisi kadonnut ja kuvaa ei olisi koskaan syntynyt. Tyyli kertoo myös arvostuksista - hetki on tärkeämpi kuin teknisesti moitteeton kuva.

Tangentially Parenthetical – street photographs around the world

I borrowed some photography related literature from the library, so here’s a small review. This time it was Ed Templeton’s new book Tangentially Parenthetical. The book was released last year and there’s a good collection of people and situations that Templeton’s camera has captured during the last 20 years.

I was introduced to Templeton’s work by his book Wayward Cognitions couple of years ago. I was impressed by his straightforward street photographs and Tangentially Parenthetical is a natural follow-up to it. Templeton has been hanging around skateboarding culture and photography for a long time and it seems that he could make a photobook from his endless photo archives quite easily.

Tangentially Parenthetical includes ca. 150 photographs and they have been taken all over North-America, Europe and Japan. I like his style as I laughed many times while I was looking at his photos. Humour and people are important part of Templeton's work. In many of the photos he has captured the critical moment when people realize that somebody just took photo of them. There’s some unsharpness in some of the photos and it tells that most of the photographs have been taken very quickly. Without this quick snapshot style most of these moments would have been lost and there would not be a photograph. This kind of style tells that moment is more valuable than technically perfect photographs.
